Your right. Matthew Gayle was about 45 or 46 when the civil war began. So scratch that idea:-)

You mentioned something about the cards and papers in Gayle's folder. Where is this folder located? Do you know how I may access this information. I have some old family photos, possibly of William Gayle. Maybe a comparison will help. If I can identify any of the individuals in the photos, whom would I contact to notify? Thanks so much for all your help.
I have no idea he was wounded. After the war, William went home to Urbana to his wife Eliza, and his son William F. (my great great grandfather), was an oystyerman, and fathered 8 more children. He died in 1878. He was 38.
