Don --

Most Confederate soldiers who died during the war are buried in unmarked graves or graves marked simply 'unknown'. The best way to answer you question would be to review a soldier's service file. Nicholas, John and John H. McCloud appear in Co. "H", 10th Virginia Regiment from Rockingham VA. The records show that all three deserted during the summer of 1862, but returned during October. John and John H. McCloud deserted again the following month and never returned to the regiment.

Note that at least five other men named John McCloud lived in Virginia at this time, four of these having military records as well. All six report ages between eighteen and twenty-seven.
