Re: Halfway House & Gooches Farm

Jim,

The Halfway House is on Virginia Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) just north of State Route 10.The building dating to the early 1700's was Butler's Headquarters. The building still stands and is a pretty famous upscale restaurant. You could be right about the Chester Station comparison. The present day town of Chester is on Route 10 with the railroads at the approach if you were heading west on Rt. 10 from JD Hwy. All of this area being in the vicinity (1-2 miles) of Bermuda Hundred and Dutch Gap/Drewry's Bluff. I actually believe it may have been the action at Kingsland Creek or even as in 1862, Proctor's Creek which is within sight of the Halfway House. Search Hotchkiss' maps and narrow it down to the Chesterfield area near the James River. I have a friend that owns land directly across the road from the Halfway House. It was originally a 5000 acre farm. This could be Gooche's Farm. I'm going to do some digging for you. Your in my stomping grounds now.
