I agree with obtaining a Gettysburg guide. There is too much information available about that three days to get by walking around without any guidance. I had been to Gettysburg at least a dozen times over the years before I took one of the open bus tours. It was worth the cost and I learned a lot in a couple of hours.

You may consider e-mailing the Battlefield Parks you plan to visit and see what they have available at the time you plan on being there. Also, if they are not too busy you may be able to talk a park historian into taking you around. Most of them love to talk about their park.

If you go to Petersburg be sure to see Blandford Church and Pamplin Park when you go to the battle field. They are close by.

My experience with the Vicksburg park volunteer guide was not very positive. It would have been good for a first time visitor who didn't know a yankee from a gentleman Confederate but I was expecting a little more detailed tour.
