Not in September 1864. Men who were [most likely, since he was about 29 years-old at the time]conscripted were sent to units who were in need of bodies. The ranks of the 45th Virginia were greatly depleted by the battles of Cloyd's Mountain and Piedmont in May and June 1864.

Don't mean to make things sound "unglamorous", but, for the most part during the Civil War, they were...at least more than some like to romanticize.
