Re: Zachariah Taylor Israel My G- Uncle

Hello Ms. Blankenship,

Zachariah Israel, who only served 26 days in the 24th Virginia prior to his death, was wounded on May 16th and died at Wayside Hospital on May 18th.

Wayside Hospital, also known as General Hospital # 9, was used as a "receiving and distributing" hospital. Men were taken there and treated prior to being transferred to one of the many hospitals in the Richmond area. Soldiers from Virginia were sent to Chimborazo Hospital. Unfortunately, Israel never made it that far. See: http://www.mdgorman.com/Hospitals/general_hospital_9.htm

He is probably among the more than 17,000 Confederate soldiers buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond. See: http://home.earthlink.net/~oakwood_cemetery/index.html

In a few cases families would bring the remains of their loved-ones home for burial. While most members of Company H, 24th Virginia Infantry were from Henry County, Israel, as I'm sure you know, was a Patrick Countian.
