Neglected CSA cemetery

Charles Harrison Marks, a VMI Battle of New Market Cadet, is resting in a cemetery that is at risk of disappearing someday. The cemetery is about 100 yards from the main house on Old Town Farm, 7600 Old Town Road (which is Rt 666), Prince George, VA 23875. As you can see from the pictures, the cemetery is still in the middle of a farm field but the trees and barbed wire fence from the 30's are gone. There were only two markers visible and it looks like Charles has two, since someone erected a VA marker in the last few years. The tall marker apparently has been unstable for a while because it is surrounded by a frame made from the same pipe used for the fence, and the marker is wired to the pipe frame. Had to pull a lot of weeds to get pictures.

You can see the photo in the Neglected Graves album on our VMI Battle of New Market Cadets website. Hopefully someone will see this that is in a nearby SCV unit or a VMI alumni that could adopt the little cemetery, and restore dignity to this veteran?

The estate on which this graveyard is located was bought in 1808 by Edward A. Marks, Jr., from the "Old Town" estate of Charles Carter. It remained in the Marks family by inheritance until sold in 1902.

Graves in 1937:
Charles H. Marks
Helen R. Marks
Edward Marks
3 children
John H. Marks
Sarah H. Marks
