Hi all,
I'd be pleased to hear from folks interested in the 1st Virginia Cavalry, particularly Companies I (Harrisonburg) and E (Augusta). My great grandfather, Erasmus A. Samuels, fought with the 52nd Virginia Infantry for about 10 months, July, 1861, through mid-May, 1862, at which time he provided a replacement for himself so he could join the 1st Virginia Cavalry. He fought with Company I and then E of the 1st Virginia Cavalry from May, 1862 until his capture by Union forces near Staunton, Virginia, in September, 1864. He was imprisoned first at the Point Lookout, Maryland, POW Camp until late December, 1964, was transferred briefly to the POW Camp at Elmira, New York, and was among the last Confederate prisoners exchanged for northern prisoners in early February, 1865.
