William H. Johnson

The following obituary appeared in the [Columbia, S.C.] Daily South Carolinian, 31 Mar 1864, p. 3, c. 1:

"OBITUARY

Died, in this city, at the Congaree House, on the 28th of February, 1864, Mr. WM. H. JOHNSON, aged about 26 years.

The deceased was a native of Lynchburg, Va., was enlisted in the Confederate service at Montgomery, Ala., and was subsequently discharged for disability."

Given the fact that he enlisted at Montgomery, it is probable that he had moved to Alabama before the outbreak of the war, but that is merely speculation. I do not know if he died in Columbia while in transit, or if he was emplyed iun one of the govenment offices located there. I also do not know if he is buried in Columbia or not. I have also posted this on the Alabama Board.
