Sorry about that! I should have been more clear. Units such as the 29th, coming from the southwest part of Virginia, did not seem to get too much consideration from the high command. They always seemed to be assigned to sideshows of the war. At least until near the end when any and all units became indispensable. I believe the only unit raised entirely from southwest Virginia, as the 29th was, that gained any notice from the high ups was the 37th Virginia, which was involved in every major operation of the ANV. Other fine units such as the 51st Virginia, 22nd Virginia,45th Virginia, to name a few, and quite a few others were relegated to the "Sideshow of the Big Show", to quote Sam Watkins. Apparently the Confederate high command had little faith in units raised in areas where the people made their own living without the help of slaves. It seems that undiciplined mountaineers were odious to the high born commanders from the eastern part of the commonwealth. Two other mountain units, the 54th and 63rd Virginia Regiments had quite a record in the Army of Tennessee! These regiments evidently made an impression on the high command of the AOT, as they were part of the rearguard, (under the command of Nathan Bedford Forrest), of the AOT in its retreat from Hood's debacle in Tennessee, during November & December, 1864.
