Re: Pvt James Johnson, Co G, 17th VA Inf

Jim,

Thanks for the tip --- I will order the Compiled Service Records for James Johnson from the research service you cited. I misread the disclaimer that notes the service is not available for Virginia soldiers, but I guess that applies only to pension files. I believe that James Johnson did die in the war, so pension files are not an issue.

One of the interesting things about James Johnson is that his brothers (Henry A Johnson and my gggf, Edward Bushrod Johnson) fought in Pennsylvania Volunteer regiments. The brothers and sisters were separated after the death of their parents in '51/'52, with the Edward and Henry going back to PA and MD respectively. I haven't been able to determine where James went, but a sister was taken in by George Corbin Washington of Georgetown. The fact that Company G originated in Alexandria makes sense.

Since Frank Field lived in Alexandria before the war, did he attend St Paul's Episcopal Church? I currently have a microfilm of the church records from the 1800's where I found not only the baptism of James Johnson, but a note made later that the same Johnson served in Emmet's Guards. I can check for Benjamin Franklin Field.

Again, thanks for all your help.
