The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Pvt James Johnson, Co G, 17th VA Inf

Steve,

I own or have owned all of the unit histories for the 17th Virginia Infantry and have garnered some information from these books. The message boards provide a Military Records Research Service, you'll note the "ad" at the top-center of this and the main message index page. There is also a link below this message. The Compiled Military Service Records and Pension Application Files from the National Archives and Virginia State Library, respectively, can provide a wealth of personal information.

My wife's gg-grandfather was a Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Field , a blacksmith from Alexandria. Frank's mother was from a well-known family, Howard, in Maryland. From books on this Howard family I've found additional info. Though I've been able to trace Frank Field after the war. He was a blacksmith/ironworker for the railroad in Western Virginia, East Tennessee and North Alabama, I've yet to determine his final resting place. I last find him in 1880 in Bridgeport, Jackson County, Alabama with wife and his younger children, including my wife's g-grandmother. As you probably know, the 1890 census was destroyed by fire and Frank and his wife Georgianna, do not appear on the 1900 census. Most of the children ended up in Memphis, Tennessee in 1900 and after. I want to find his grave to place a Confederate marker, if one does not exist.

Jim
