While going through my mother-in-laws things, we found a small New Testament from her grandfather. Written on the front page is the following ...
Ben P Hawley
Of “A” 30th
Battalion
Fort Delaware
Came here on the
12 of March 1865
Captured March 4,1865
At Waynesborough
Augusta County
His name was Benjamin P Hawley and it seems he received the Bible at Fort Delaware when he became a POW after the Battle of Waynesborough. We had no idea he was in the civil war, let alone a prisoner. I found a microfilm record at archive.org of his entry at Fort Delaware on March 13,1865, but I can't find a release date, or any other information.
Also, someone mentioned sending a picture of this to others. The Bible is an heirloom and will stay with the family, but I'd love to pass on a copy of the front. It is very faded and took work to figure it out, but still a treasure.
