Re: Recruiting Europeans to in Fight in the Civil

Rick,

In Virginia, two front-line companies that were mostly German-Americans entered Confederate service. The Virginia (German) Rifles entered service as Company K of the 1st Virginia Regiment, and The Marion Rifles served with the 15th Virginia Regiment in Company K.

Others included:

A German Infirmary Company was formed in March 1862 to treat wounded soldiers during battle.

Company H of the 19th Virginia Militia was reorganized as the German Home Guard in October 1863, to serve in the field and to guard prisons.

Company M, Nineteenth Virginia Militia was also organized in 1863 and was composed of many of the members of Richmond’s German community.
