Re: Recruiting Europeans to in Fight in the Civil

My great great grandfather came over from Germany through the city of Baltimore in late 1861 or early 1862. His name Charles Schminkey(Schminke and other spellings). There no Charles Schminkey in the 1860 census in Maryland, Virginia. The Charles Schminke I am referring to was born 1836-1838 and buried in Hackensack cemetery in New Jersey. A Charles Schminkey is listed on Clutter's artillery battery (Virginia). Also V. Clutter's daughter is buried in Hackensack cemetery in a plot next to the Schminke plot. I think Charles Schminke has to be connected to the Valentine Clutter family. That is Why I asked the question if Germans were recruited to fight for the Confederate States. What German units were raised in Richmond? Thanks Rick
