I am trying trace my genealogy and am hitting a dead end with Absolom Holland (aka Joseph Absolom Holland, also spelled Absalom). According to the National Park Service Database he served in the 59th Regiment, Virginia Militia. I have been trying to find information about this regiment but am unable to find anything.

I'm also having difficulty tracing further back because all local records were destroyed during the war. So any ideas on how to search further back would be greatly appreciated
