The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Hiram Justice/Justus/Justis

George, Yes it is. I was familiar with the story and probably should have given you a heads up on it. His Find A Grave Memorial is rather detailed.

The information needed is for membership for a lady for the UDC. As you know stories are great but the UDC needs some documentation.

The story goes he was with the 2nd Virginia State guards and then the 10th Kentucky Cavalry (Diamonds) and then he was a POW and was galvanized and they deserted for fought for the South again.

I see him in the 10th Kentucky Cavalry only.

Buchanan County, Virginia was founded in 1858 from parts of Russell and Tazewell counties in Virginia. I see three men named Hiram Justice in the 1850 census. Two from Tazewell county and one from Russell County. All three were of military age. Looking at Hiram Justice's CMSRs it looks like something of a cross over. There is a captain and a private in Company H of the 10th Kentucky Cavalry and one under the name of Wylie Justice in Company H of the 10th Kentucky Cavalry. This could be the 3 men living in the 1850 census.

The rules for a UDC membership are if he was a galvanized Yankee and then came back for fought for the Confederacy then the descendant could still use this to gain membership.

Jeffery Weaver may have written a book on the 2nd Virginia State line but I'm not sure.
