Re: Dick the Drummer-18th VA. Regiment

Dick Slate (Colored), Drummer, F & S, 18th Regiment Virginia Infantry, enlisted June 30, 1861 at Fairfax C. H. by Col. Withers for one year, recorded with Band on the Jan/Feb, 1862 muster roll, presence not stated at the April 30, 1862 muster, no further records

Note, as he no longer appears on any subsequent muster rolls, it would appear he was dropped from the rolls. I would assume because he was Colored and/or dropped perhaps at the expiration of his one years service.

Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Virginia

He is noted in other documents as a "free men of color" and veteran of the Mexican War
