CanA Civilian’s Recollections of the War Between the States
by Horace Smith Fulkerson of Vicksburg, Mississippi
1886
Rev. C K Marshall of Vicksburg; It has been the writer’s wish to get an account of the valuable service rendered by the Rev. Doctor C K Marshall of Vicksburg as organizer of the Hospital Service in Virginia for the benefit of the Mississippi troops, with which service he (The writer.) had no acquaintance. He has sough this account a the hands of the Doctor himself, and also of his able assistant, Major Hood of Forest, Mississippi, but has been unable to get anything from them in furtherance of his desire and purpose. This is to be regretted, as it is a part of the History of the War, and would largely go to show with what alacrity the noble women of the State responded to every appeal to their patriotism, humanity and devotion to the Cause. (Page # 142) We know enough about the men of the War but too little about the women. We know much of their patient sufferings; We want to know more of their sacrifices and self - denial. They were as heroic as the husbands, sons and brothers. They gave, too, to the War and are deserving of every honorable mention accorded them. (Page # 143)
