Just wanted to mention that Jacob H. Lemley of the 48th VA Valley Brass Band also wrote a diary which is in the hands of the Handley Regional Library. Looks like he also detailed his 170 mile walk home after Lee's surrender at Appomatox C. H. Here is a link:

I also found a short account from J. W. Blaker concerning one of the Valley Brass Band's furloughs Jan 1864 in one of the Confederate Veteran publications... pause... let me look for the link right quick...
