GG Grandfather captured at Amelia Springs

Today, April 5th, is the 150th anniversary of the battle of Amelia Springs, Va. which was a cavalry engagement that took place on the retreat from Richmond. My GG Grandfather, Luther Kincaid Justis, was captured there. Luther served as a Lt. early in the war in the 20th Va. Infantry which was broken up after Rich Mountain. He then was Capt. in the 3rd Va. Art. (Local Defense). That too was broken up early in the war. After that he seems to have gone to the 59th Va. Inf. which missed most of the major action here in Va. until late in the war. He must have quit midwar for some reason and gone home. I like to think he probably got fed up with being in the backwater areas instead of where the real action was taking place. Anyway, he got married and soon showed up as a private in the 1st Va. Cav. He lost a horse at Cedar Creek and was captured at Amelia Springs. He served three months at Pt. Lookout and, according to my dad, he hated Yankees and wouldn't wear blue till the day he died. In the margin of a roster of the 1st Va. Cav., there is supposed to be a notation that says "Good Man". He liked to go to the reunions in Richmond and, on at least one occasion, his much younger second wife, after being introduced as his daughter, addressed the speaker to inform him that she had the pleasure of being the Captain's wife, not his daughter. There was an ancestor to be proud of!
