8th Va Cavalry, misfiled records

If you search the record file for Joseph William Brown of the 8th VA Cavalry, you will see records that go all the way to 1865. However, Joseph William Brown died at the battle of Flat Top Mountain. (Link to Find a Grave is http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=120655348&ref=acom

The other records belong to Joshua Wilson Brown who served in Company I of the 8th at first, then was made ordnance sergeant of the Regiment in which capacity he served the entire length of the war. He signed up in Kanawha County as he lived in Paint Creek. However, in 1862, the family fled to Union in Monroe County and stayed there until the end of the war. Joshua's son, Francis M Brown, joined Company I late in 1964 when he was 17. Joshua was 40. The problem is, Joshua never used his name. He was always JW Brown. So his records just got filed with Jospeh William.

I would so love to have Joshua recognized for his service instead of assigning what he did to someone else. Any ideas on how I might proceed? Thank you.
