Saltpeter Works / Niter / Nitre

Looking for information about the saltpeter (niter) workings in the Shenandoah Valley, with headquarters at Staunton, Va., commanded by James F. Jones. Many men in the area worked in the caves and for contractors, and many more sold supplies to Jones.

I know that a force under Jones took part in the Battle of Piedmont (New Hope) in June 1864 - does anyone have a listing of those who were killed, wounded and captured? The Compiled Service Records are nearly useless for this project. There must be a record somewhere.

Also looking for information about saltpeter operations in the Greenbrier - Monroe - Alleghany area.

Thanks!!
