He probably walked east to the Petersburg area- the railroads were in use only by the Union military, and stage coaches were sporadic, at best. Most men walked home. In Petersburg, he could have possibly gotten shipping to Hampton Roads and made his way to the York River and Gloucester Point. The best thing to do to track your ancestor would be to go to the county courthouse and look for his records- especially land records. If he received a pension, it should be on file at the State Archives in Richmond. The chances of finding a picture of him is very slim. Outside of your family, the best place to look for a picture of him would be at the historical society or the archives in Gloucester.
