Attended U.Va. A lawyer and insurance agent. He practiced in Baltimore until the War came. He returned to Virginia and enlisted in the Northumberland Rifles in May of 1861.

Joseph is actually buried in the Deshields Family Graveyard along with other Deshields. It is located behind the St. Stephens Graveyard.

His occupation on the 1870 census looks like "White Nasher" another gentleman on his enumeration sheet lists the same occupation.
