Petersburg to Gloucester in late 1864... Not very easy... via horse or wagon took about three-four days at best... Also remember that much of Gloucester County by that time was Federal occupied....or patrolled... Federals had secured Gloucester Point... Much of the rest of the county later in the war was a burned and pillaged no-mans-land and buffer zone... Many residents had left, those that remained were subjected to frequent Federal cavalry patrols. The next closest Confederate force to guard and watch for further Federal intrusions was a garrison further up the peninsula in King & Queen County....
