Re: Charlottesville Hospital register

Sure looks like him. Tis strange the reference to Capt. Henley, Co. G, as he resigned from that position July 1862?

Is this your man?

37. THOMAS JEFFERSON7 MASSIE (JESSE6, JOHN5, CHARLES4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, EDMUND1 MASSEY) was born July 01, 1828, and died Abt. 1861 in during the Civil War, casket returned to family ?. He married ELIZABETH BEARD19 April 02, 1851 in Amherst County, Virginia, daughter of ARCHIBALD BEARD and ELIZABETH WRIGHT. She was born July 08, 1828, and died 1894.

Notes for ELIZABETH BEARD:

When Jefferson came home from the Civil War for a brief stay the last time he said he wouldn't be back anymore until the war was over. The family watched him walk out through the corn field and he was seen no more. Bettie was left parent to six boys and it became serious as to how to make a living for herself and the boys. Emma Woodson Massie describes her as "brave and did all she could. After her house work was over, she could be seen leading her boys to the field before sunrise. As they grew older they bought a farm near Piney River Church for their mother. The boys were forceful, genial, and talkers."

There is a story that Thomas Jefferson died in Charlottesville with a fever and his body was packed in charcoal and returned home for burial. Bettie didn't want to be put by him in burial because she couldn't be sure he was her husband. She is said buried at the Byron Massie cemetery.
