I know because I read his military service file. Unfortunately your experience with the folks in Washington is quite common -- you wait for weeks or even months to be informed that the file you ordered cannot be identified.

The records also show that S. A. Willis of Co. "A" died at Port Hudson LA on March 30, 1863.
