Randy Rhoads,

Where did you find this Sep 3, 1864 letter? ..Is it in the public record?
.
Quoting:
There is a letter from a Capt. Smith of the 30th Texas Cavalry dated Sept 3, 1864 to Betsy Gray informing her of her husband's (William Gray, my ancestor) death at Buffalo Station on August 31, 1864. It says he was taken sick in camp and after a week they sent him to the hospital with William Chenault to tend him. He later died at the hospital in Buffalo Station.

Buffalo Springs in Clay County TX was a major fort for Bourland's Regiment. ..Settlers forted-up there.
.
Many of my relatives lived - and still live - in this area. They had lived in the Hopkins-Lamar County area and were sent to "protect the North and West Frontier" then brought their families to the frontier. ..See my "East Texas Recruits Sent to West Texas" index that shows the names of about 300 soldiers who first enrolled in East Texas then enrolled in West Texas with a mandate to protect the settlers and properties of North and West Texas. ..Of course, many soldiers' names were not recorded in East Texas, but they dutifully went to protect the Texas Frontier. ..This illustration of an important migration pattern is one of my major contributions to Texas history.
.
Later Buffalo Springs was a station for the "Red River Land & Cattle Company" whose headquarters was three miles west in Fannintown (now Joy), Clay County TX. ..I invite questions about the Red River Land & Cattle Company that encompassed 102,000 acres on the Texas side of Red River spilling into Archer, Wichita, and Jack Counties ... Yes, this huge ranch included at least 50,000 acres in Indian Territory.
.
By the way there was another Buffalo Springs in the Texas Panhandle, in Oldham County, I think.
