4thTX Militia, State Troops

Mssrs. et Mesdames,

Am seeking information about 4th Texas Militia, State troops from Panola, Shelby, & Sabine Counties.

Col. John Sayles(1825-1897) , a maternal ancestor of mine, was commander of this unit. He is buried in Abilene Municipal Cemetery.

He was Assistant Adjutant General and Judge Advocate General under General John Bankhead Magruder when Magruder was sent west by Lee from 1862 to 1863. Sayles may have participated in the recapture of Galveston, but I have very little from NARA about his service record.

He's mentioned once or twice in the Official Records.
Does anyone have any information about Sayles or about his unit, the 4th Texas Militia, State Troops....?
