Austin City Light Artillery Company

The State Gazette, Austin, on June 22 1861 published a muster Roll of the Austin City Light Artillery Company that was organized June 14, 1861. H. Wilke was the Captain. Among the privates was a J. Schneider. I am trying to determine if this was my ancestor Johann (also known as Jean or John) Schneider. Jean was born in 1813 in Welgesheim, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany; immigrated in April 1846 settled in New Braunfels; naturalized in 1851 in Austin Texas; and died Jan 18, 1862 in Austin, Texas. We know he served in the Confederate Army, and that his widow did not seek any pension. I asked History-Sites.com to do a search and Jim Martin discovered a John Schneider who served with the 15 Texas Field Battery (apparently a later name for the Austin City Light Artillery) but that John Schneider (card number 50472816 and 50472846) transferred to the 15 Field Battery (Capt. W. H. Nichol's Co. Light Artillery) in April of 1864 and deserted in May of 1964, two years after the death of my relative. I also received research on a John Schneider of Company E Ragsdale Battn Texas Cavalry and a John Schneider of Co H, 1 Texas Heavy Art'y, neither of whom turned out to be my ancestor (they too were alive well after 1862).

I have strong suspicion that the J. Schneider listed in the Austin City Light Artillery is my relative since other German names appear in the muster roll, including a name of a friend JL Buaas.

I don't know where to proceed next, in my search. Can anyone give me help or suggestions?
