W. A. T. Oliver, 1 TEX

I recently discovered the following obituary:

"W. A T. OLIVER, AGED CONFEDERATE VETERAN, PASSES IN ALABAMA

Former Citizen of Lowndesville [S.C.] Dies in Alabama; Relatives in County.

Below we publish an account of the death of Mr. W. A. T. Oliver, formerly of Lowndesville, and an uncle of Miss Mae Robertson, of Greenville; Mrs. C. A. Baskin, of Taylors [S.C.]; A. M. Robertson, of Little Rock, Ark.; D. Townes Robertson, of Birmingham, Ala.; also Messrs. W. L. and T. J. Bowman and Mrs. Ida Cooley, of Lowndesville [S.C.].

Mr. Oliver was one of the oldest surviving members of the Confederate veterans, having gone to the war in the First Texas Regiment, Hood's Brigade. He was a great foirem amd admirer of the late General [rank in United Confederate Veterans] R. R. Hemphill, and was well known by the old citizens of Abbeville County, especially the Lowndesville section.

He died in Gadsden, Ala., Octovber 7 [1930], and the following account is from the Gadsden, Ala Times:

"W. A. T. Oliver, 91, gallant Confederate soldier and pioneer citizen of Etowah County, died at his home near the city, Tuesday morning, the victim of old age.

Funeral services were held at Mt. Zion church at 12:30 o'clock Wedensday afternoon, with Rev. G. E. Wallace, of Asheville, and Rev. Doyce Mitchell, pastor of the Mt. Zion Church, in charge. The burial was at Forrest Cemetery here [Gadsden].

Mr. Oliver was born in Lowndesville, S. C., and moved here when quite a young man. He was a farmer of the old school and owned a large plantation near the city. He was a hay raiser and made considerable money at it. He never went in for one crop, however, and was known as a prosperous planter.

Mr. Oliver attended all of the state and natinal Confederate reunions for the past 40 years and was widely known all voer the South bercause of the fact.

Surviving are a nephew, Henry Oliver, of Gadsden; and Miss MCassie Olvier, a missionary to China. Other nephews and nieces are Mrs. Arthur Rish, of Steadman [Lexington County], S.C.; Luther and Jeff Bowman and Mrs. Ida Cooley=, of Lowndesville [Abbeville County], S.C.; J. T.
