French/Indiana cross-border incident in Texas

On 19 June 1865, General Ulysses Grant advised secretary of War E.M. Stanton that French troops had fired upon Indiana troops during a border incident on the Texas-Mexican border (see O.R., ser. 1, vol. 48, pt. 2, p. 922). I believe this regiment may have been the 34th Indiana Infantry.

Does anyone have any additional details on this incident, or have access to any other histories that might shed additional light on it?
