Granbury’s Brigade—medical records

Dr. A. A. Laurence served as brigade surgeon for Granbury’s Texas Brigade. This brigade was composed of the 6th, 7th, and 10th Regiments of Texas Infantry and the 15th, 17th, 18th, 24th, and 25th Regiments of Texas Dismounted Cavalry. It also included some non-Texas units. In a letter published in the Galveston Daily News (July 22, 1866), Dr. Laurence announced that he had the medical book of Granbury’s Brigade listing the casualties from Chickamauga, Georgia (September 19-20, 1863) to Nashville, Tennessee (December 15, 1864). Some of these casualty lists were printed in various newspapers during the war but some were not. Dr. Laurence offered to make these lists available for publication in the Galveston Daily News but it is not known if this ever happened. Dr. A. A. Laurence died January 31, 1891 in London, England. His body was supposed to have been returned to Memphis, Tennessee for burial. It would be interesting to know if this medical book still exists in some public or private collection.
