I do not know the extent of the use of the Mustang breed of horses by the Texan cavalryman but it probably would have been considerable and something to consider. Mustangs can get by on grass and brush and keep their stamina and are very sturdy and can take a lot of hard use.. Your big fat American horses had to have grain and oats or they are only good for a short sprint.
