If only we could ask Montreval Jefferson Hall, the CSA Depositary at Marshal. On the Richmond end some of the Marshal Depository records related to the Post Office Department were captured and now digitized for viewing at the National Archives as part of Record Group 109, Rebel Archives.

On the Marshal end, Hall would have had extensive account books and records of transactions. I do not know if the Federals recovered his accounts or if Hall may have destroyed them at the end of the war.
