Hello, Mr. Smith:

I honestly don't know the answer to your question. I post interesting, provacative, and unusual items as I come across them while doing my thing, which is writing chapters of Civil War material into a book which will never be published. I am a sick old man who has only months to live, and I write and research to maintain my sanity while awaiting.

I will say that if this did indeed occur, there would be no further "official" mention anywhere, as it was obviously extra-judicial. The only place it might be mentioned is in private journals, diaries, letters, etc. Perhaps some of the gifted researchers of one of theses boards (and there are many) might could find some mention somewhere that proves it one way or the other. I have only limited access to databases and other research sites, since I have co-pays and medicine to pay for, which takes most of my money. I'm just glad I manage to stay online month by month.

I will note that this item was extensively printed and re-printed (as was, of course the norm for such material) in many newspapers, which in no way proves or disproves the content. If you are interested in a list of cities (Confederate and Union) and newspapers that re-ran this item, or printed news item of similar nature, holler and I will post same.

Thank you for reading and replying. If you ever find more material on this, please do post it here.

Regards,
Hoyt Cagle
