Thanks Bill, I did notice the Robert Houston in the 7th Arkansas Cavalry, Company M. The fact he owned a large ranch, caused me to think he may have been an officer. This man entered a 3rd Lieutenant. They didn't organize till July, 1863 after the conscript law. The slave, James does mention he went in the place of a Dr. Carroll. Don't know how it was in Arkansas, but they were conscripting free persons of color in Tennessee by June, 1863.
