Thanks George, all but a couple of the counties appear to me to be in s.e. Texas. The regiment this man and his slave were in would have served in the Trans-Mississippi. The slave Jim, speaks of fighting at the battle of Independence (Missouri) and almost drowning trying to get back across a river. I don't know a good deal about the Trans-Mississippi, didn't know there was a battle at Independence, than found out there were 3 or 4 engagements there.
