If a display at Hillsboro stated James "Polk" Knight originally joined the 35th Texas Cavalry before being transferred that same year to the 1st Texas Infantry Regiment, we better look at some more facts.

James Polk Knight joined Company "H" of Likens' 35th Tx Cav in April or May 1863, but it is highly unlikely he transferred to the 1st Tx. JP states in his pension #13988 he joined the 35th and served 3 years in the cavalry. Actually it was 2 years. There are no NARA record of James Polk which is not uncommon for the 35th, but both of his pension witnesses were documented members of Company "H" of Likens 35th Rgt and stated they served in the same company with James Polk till the end of the war. Somewhere in my records, I have a copy of the UCV biography written by A. J. Adams, a member of Company "H" of Likens 35th who mentions James Polk as being his comrade during the war.

James Polk's son applied for and was awarded a veterans headstone marked with Co "H" 35th Tx Cav. On the application someone wrote Brown's 35th, but that was incorrect. According to Find-A-Grave James "Polk" Knight has two military markers. The second marker states James "Polk" Knight was in Co "E" of the 5th Tx Cav, but that is also incorrect. James "Patrick" Knight's pension #29744, NARA records on Fold3, and his pardon indicate he was in the 5th. James Polk was from Smith County and James Patrick was from Washington County.

The brother of James Polk, Josephus A. Knight, was in the 1st Tx Inf. According to a write up posted on Find-A-Grave, Josephus won the Gold Star for bravery in 1865. Whether that is accurate or not, I do not know.

I do not believe anyone who served in the 1st Tx would have forgotten their service in that most famous of brigades, especially since his brothers were veterans of the 1st.

My apologies if this is posting is confusing, but it is getting late. If anyone comes up with additional information on James Polk Knight of the 35th, please let me know as I maintain a data base on the veterans of this regiment.
