Spaight and Speight Confusion

Spaight and Speight Confusion
Hi all – I read that abt May 1, 1963, Colonel Spaight's three infantry companies (C, D, and E) were attached to Colonel J. W. Speight's brigade.

I am still trying to figure out 1863, for my GreatGF, Thomas Cussen. Thomas was ranked in Corpl, ranked out prvt. Spaight’s 11th Bat, Co. E. I discovered (through George) that Thomas was “in arrest, Houston” in July 1863 and recorded as “deserted” in December 1863. I can find no other information during this period.

It seems that after Spaight attached Co. E (and Co C, Co D) to Speight’s, something changed in Thomas Cussen records and presence. This seems important and related to his absence and arrest in June 1863, Houston.

I can seem to get this organized in my brain or paper. Why the new attachment (espc.Thomas’s Co E) to SPEIGHT? And what is the history of SPEIGHT after adding these new companies from SPAIGHT. And how long?
What did a Corporal do? Would he remain a Corpl in the new assignment?

Boy, these poor soldiers were tugged in every direction (all the Confederate units).
Thanks.

PS: I can’t begin to tell you all how much I appreciate your time and help in honoring my family. You shared information I would have never found. I never take any of you for granted. I also learn a great deal of history in reading about the other families and situation.
