1.5 Million horses killed in Civil War

Thanks George, for the comparison. WOW. Mind blowing.

I just read, an article, by Keith 930, “For The Real War Horses in the Civil War: It Was no Spielberg Movie”. I have not researched the documented number of horse/mule losses, but this article stated “ at least 1.5 million horses and mules were killed during the war, and perhaps as many as 3.5 million. For every soldier killed during the Civil War, almost 5 horses met a similar fate.”

I also found this recollection by Gen. Gibbons (Union) shocking:
“One thing which forcibly occurred to me was the perfect quiet with which the horses stood in their places. Even when a shell, striking in the midst of a team, would knock over one or two of them or hurl one struggling in its death agonies to the ground, the rest would make no effort to struggle or escape but would stand stolidly by as if saying to themselves, "It is fate, it is useless to try to avoid it."

OMG…this is horrible. And the horses that did live probably had big time post traumatic stress like humans.

As a behavioral health RN, I experienced horses on a different level than many people. Equine therapy, is amazing and not spoken about often. Horses have an innate ability to connect. This therapy helps kids and adults with issues in anxiety and depression, ADHD, Autism, cerebral palsy and Post traumatic stress syndrome. The interaction with the horse teach confidence, communication skills, impulse control, social skills, boundaries and even spiritual connection. I have been involved in this therapy hands – on , so I know it is true.

Thank you all for letting me get on my horse and be mushy!
