J. R. Edwards, Private, Company D, 9th Regiment Alabama Infantry, enlisted May 27, 1861 in Lauderdale County, Ala. for the war, slightly wounded at the battle of Salem Church, Va. May 3, 1863, assigned Extra Duty as Acting Ass’t Surgeon July, 1863 serving through the year as such with the rank as Private, last recorded as Private and present at the Sep/Oct., 1864 muster,* captured at Mattox Bridge April 10, 1865, signed Oath June 24,1865 at Newport News, Va. resident of Lauderdale County, Ala., 5’ 4”

* Note, this was the last muster roll recorded for Company D. He is not recorded on the Field & Staff unit information card

There are two end of war POW cards which state his rank as Sgt. Maj. I believe these may be in error
