Re: CSA ancestor killed at Iuka, MS

Thanks, Troy Gresham, I remember his name from the list of soldiers who were removed from within the corporate limits of Iuka and reinterred at Shady Grove Cemetery.

I looked for his CMR and did not find anyone by the name of Gort, but I did find a Gant. I made this note on him: [Note: The names on Dewoody’s list were taken from wooden headboards in 1867, and some were unreadable. He lists Wm.M. Gort, from Belleville, Rush County, TX; wounded in battle of Iuka; died October 14, 1862. Research shows no names of GORT in CMR’s. However, W.M. GANT 3rd Cpl. Co. B. 3rd TX Cav. is shown on muster roll as being wounded and taken prisoner at Iuka on 19 Sept. 1862. I believe the name GORT was mis-transcribed by Dr. Wilson, and should be GANT.]

The 1st TX Legion (27th TX Cav.) and the 3rd TX Cav. suffered several casualties in the Battle of Iuka.

If we can get one soldiers record that states he was killed in action in the Battle of Iuka, we may be able to get his headstone placed at a cemetery which is on the actual battlefield. (This cemetery is on the battlefield map and is still maintained) This may open a door for us to be able to get others placed there. The killed in action CSA soldiers from the Battle of Iuka never had headboards, they were buried on the battlefield. The only record we have of them is their CMR's.

The names of the CSA soldiers who were reinterred at Shady Grove Cemetery were not actually killed in battle, they died of wounds and were known to the people who took care of them. This is why their graves had headboards. They were buried inside the city limits, in lots and gardens, after the war, those graves (some had partially exposed bodies) were moved to Shady Grove Cemetery. Thirty some odd names were on the DeWoody list, but around 200 bodies were moved to Shady Grove. The DeWoody list is the list of men whose graves Dr. Wilson moved.

The killed in action CSA soldiers never had headboards, they were buried on the battlefield. The only record we have is their CMR's which state "killed in Battle of Iuka" or "killed in Iuka."
We are trying to find a descendant of a soldier who was buried on the battlefield at Iuka to meet the "criteria" the VA wants.

Troy, my maiden name is Gresham, if your ancestors were from Greene Co. GA., we are probably related.
