In the fall of 1862, plans were made for Texas cavalry regiments to be sent to Lee's Army, but these were ultimately retained in the Trans Mississippi.

Oct 18, 1862 HQs Trans Ms Dept, Little Rock, Arkansas, General Holmes commanding to General Hindman commanding 1st Corps Trans Ms Army--…To complete my depression I have just received a telegraphic order to send seven regiments of Texas troops to Richmond. Let this be entirely confidential. I will probably send Garland's three regiments and Sibley's Brigade.

Six of these seven regiments were cavalry. However, it should be noted that two of these [those with Garland] had previously been dismounted to serve as infantry, as had many others in the Trans Mississippi in the summer of 1862.

These seven regiments were planned to be sent to General Lee as a result of his several attempts to increase the Texas forces in his command. However, it seems obvious to me that General Lee was wanting more Texas infantry regiments and not cavalry. He had great admiration for the three Texas infantry regiments in his army and wanted more.

7/26/62 Lee to Wigfall, CS Senate, &c.: I send you herewith enclosed the reports of three Texas Regiments of Hood's Brigade. You will perceive that 334 recruits are wanted for the 4th Regiment; 486 recruits for the 1st Regiment; 316 recruits for the 5th Regiment, and, in addition to these, 100 extra men for the 4th Regiment, 60 for the 1st Regiment, and 60 for the 5th Regiment, in order to fill up losses likely to be sustained by deaths and discharges among the present sick and wounded; making a total of 1,336 recruits needed to fill up the three Regiments. In addition to these, two more Regiments are desired to fill up the Brigade and five more for a second Texas Brigade. This application I would most earnestly urge. If the seven new Regiments cannot be obtained, we ought at least to be able to get five, in order to make two Texas Brigades of four Regiments each.

9/21/62 Near Martinsburg-Lee to Gen Wigfall-I have not yet heard from you with regard to the new Texas Regiments. Which you promised to endeavor to raise for this army.
I use them much. I rely on them and have in all tight places and fear I have to call on them too often. They have fought gallantly, nobly and we must have more of them.
Please make every possible exertion to get them in and send them on to the army. ___must help us in the matter. With a few more such Regiments as them would Hood now has as an example of daring and bravery, I could feel much more confident of the results of the campaign.
