Re: Great grandpa in 5th TX MV, but pension reject

Thanks for the replies, all. I looked up his pension letters at the local library. Wow! My great grandpa's writing! His two witnesses testimonies were very interesting as was his own writing. They indicate that he continued to serve (Galveston, Louisiana and Red River Campaign) after wandering back from New Mexico, although again I don't find any corroborating information in the official microfilm records (save perhaps his parole in June 1865). I guess looking into other soldier's writings and other records is my best chance to find other mention of him, as well as those reunion stories in old newspapers. There are a few books that others wrote, one mentions an anecdote about him by name at the time of his capture. Theophilus Noel, a veteran, has a book of recollections is on my reading list, he writes about the unit in Louisiana.

Lately I'm looking for photos of others who served in his unit, been lucky to find several images on the web as well as some artwork. We stumbled onto Civil War days out in Glorieta NM a month ago and go to see the countryside there, someone has put a sort of folk museum out at the site of the Apache Canyon skirmish where he was captured.
