Re: Jefferson Mounted and Spaights 11th bat

Really... a soldier could "run away" to another unit? (without fear of desertion classification and consequences). I read that "On May 4, 1861, Captain Joseph Hebert enlisted a 55-man cavalry company, the "Jefferson County Mounted Rangers," at Beaumont. However, neither company entered active service in its original form" (W.T. Block). And, "Members of Joseph Hebert's old company drifted away to join other units bound for the warfront." I may be wrong, but this beginning period of organization must have been hectic. I know, my Thomas Cussens was in this unit and the next record is the Spaights 11th.
So, if you have time, can you explain the difference between Battalion? Unit? Why were there so many Companies within the units? And, calvary included horsemanship along with gun experience? Infantry was gunnng? (so for the terminology).
