Other than Kirby Smith’s recommendation of November 8, 1863. I could not find anything more regarding his appointment in the OR.

Nor is he found in Vol. 10, The Photographic History of the Civil War, Armies and Leaders, General Officers, Union and Confederate - A Complete Roster

A Goggle search found this entry in the Texas State Historical Society, SPEIGHT, JOSEPH WARREN. There is no mention of a promotion to BGen. I would believe had he actually received the promotion it would have appeared here.

The piece on him found in The Baptist Encyclopaedia: A Dictionary of the Doctrines, Ordinances . . of . . ., edited by William Cathcart, page 1090, is headed

“Speight, Gen. Joseph Warren,” which contains this sentence,

“He was promoted to the command of a brigade, and continued as its general until after the battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, La, at the later of which he was wounded.”

I suspect that his “promotion” to General was nothing more than the title usually associated with his command, much as skippers on Navy vessels, no mater their rank, are addressed as Captain.
