J.W. SPEIGHT

Col. Joseph Warren Speight commanded the 15th Infantry and was very heavily involved with the Trans-Mississippi campaigns. He was recommended for a field appointment as a Birgadier General in December, 1863. However, I cannot find where the appointment became valid before he retired and returned to Waco. There are numerous references to his being a general in various events and announcement in Waco. But his tombstone is marked as "COL. JOESPH WARREN SPEIGHT". Can someone provide verfication that he was officially give the appointment as Brig. General?
