Hello Mic, In my opinion the two blacks that Sims was referring to who died at Camp Chase were buried in the Southeast Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. The Southeast Cemetery was also known by many other names, East Cemetery, Livingston Cemetery etc.

Because of Federal regulations not being in place the dead Confederates in March 1862 did not list their burial sites. However in April of 1862 that changed. I see many Confederate officers who died at Camp Chase as buried in the Southeast City Cemetery. This cemetery was also a place where if you were poor and had no money and died in Columbus you would likely be buried.

In May 1869 the United States quartermasters department removed fifty Confederates from the Southeast Cemetery to the Camp Chase Cemetery. The Southeast Cemetery was about 3 and one half miles from Camp Chase. The names of the fifty were not listed and keep in mind there were well over 100 Confederates buried at the Southeast Cemetery. I don't believe the United States quartermasters department would have moved Confederate political prisoners or the blacks to whom Sims was referring to.

The cemetery was removed in 1881-1882. This might explain as to why the graves could not be located according to Sims letter well after the war. Today the Livingston City Park and the Columbus Children's Hospital occupies where the Southeast City Cemetery once stood. There were about 2,000 graves in the Southeast City Cemetery and ten boxes of remains were brought to Green Lawn and buried in a mass grave. Needless to say that many bodies were not removed only their head boards or tombstones. During a flood after the war many of the tombstones at the Southeast City Cemetery were taken and used to help up dam Alum Creek. In 1959 one tombstone was located. According to a newspaper articles during the 1950's while digging basements for homes near the cemetery bodies were being dug up.
